Many men strive for a firm, masculine chest. However, factors like genetics, weight fluctuations, medications, and hormonal changes can lead to the development of excess breast tissue—a condition known as gynecomastia. At American Medical Center, gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) is performed to flatten the chest and restore a more athletic, contoured look.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have enlarged male breast tissue, including excess fat, glandular tissue, or loose skin

  • Have tried other treatments with limited or no improvement

  • Have stabilized breast development

  • Feel self-conscious or unhappy with your chest appearance

  • Are in good general health and do not smoke

  • Have realistic expectations for the results

While some younger men may benefit from the procedure, it’s best to wait until breast development is stable. If any lumps are present, the surgeon will evaluate for other medical conditions before surgery.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

The procedure is done under general or local anesthesia. It often combines liposuction (to remove excess fat) and surgical excision (to remove glandular tissue).

Incisions are usually made around the areola or in natural folds of the chest. For more severe cases, where the areola has stretched due to sagging tissue, the procedure may also include areola reduction.

Some patients choose to combine gynecomastia surgery with other body contouring procedures like liposuction, an arm lift, or a tummy tuck for comprehensive results.

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery

  • Most patients return to work within 7 to 10 days

  • Light cardio activity can begin after 2 weeks

  • More intense activities like weight training can resume after 4 weeks

Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are expected. Your surgeon may recommend:

  • Pain medication

  • A compression vest

  • Ice therapy to reduce discomfort and swelling

Expected Results

Results are visible immediately after the procedure. As swelling subsides and the body heals, the chest takes on a more natural, firm shape. Final results typically become fully apparent between 3 to 6 months, and most patients are highly satisfied with the outcome.
